What is Peanut the Squirrel?

Peanut the Squirrel is a meme coin project on the Solana network, symbolized by a squirrel. The project draws inspiration from the unfortunate demise of a real-life squirrel named Pnuts, allegedly mistreated and killed by authorities in New York State.

Pnuts’s death sparked widespread outrage and grief online, particularly among animal lovers. A surge of content related to the keyword “Peanut the Squirrel” emerged as people expressed their condolences and anger.

This event also triggered a wave of “PNUT” meme coins in the cryptocurrency world, with numerous projects using the keyword. The common goal of these projects is to commemorate the squirrel.

Amongst the numerous PNUT meme coins, Binance announced the listing of the Peanut the Squirrel project on its Spot market on November 11, 2024. Before the announcement, Peanut the Squirrel had a market cap of around $100 million. Just one hour later, this figure tripled to approximately $300 million.

The Story Behind the PNUT Meme Coin

Pnuts the squirrel gained online recognition through the Instagram account peanut_the_squirrel12. According to Pnuts’s owner, Longo, he rescued and cared for the squirrel seven years prior after witnessing its mother being hit by a car.

Through charming photos and engaging stories, Longo’s Instagram channel amassed 900,000 followers. This success led him to establish a non-profit organization called “Peanut’s Freedom Farm,” providing refuge for over 300 abandoned animals, including squirrels, raccoons, and dogs.

Pnuts’s story took a tragic turn on October 30, 2024, when the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) raided Longo’s home and seized Pnuts, citing a ban on keeping wild animals as pets. Tragically, the DEC officers not only confiscated Pnuts but also allegedly euthanized and dissected the animal.

Longo’s account of the incident ignited a wave of indignation from animal lovers. Influential figures also voiced their disapproval of the DEC’s actions, including Elon Musk, New York Congressman Nick Langworthy, and even former President Donald Trump.

Pnuts’s story resonated beyond Web2, capturing the attention of the Web3 community. Numerous meme coin projects emerged, themed around Pnuts, to commemorate the squirrel and express collective dissent against the DEC’s actions. The Peanut the Squirrel meme coin project is one of them.

Notably, the Peanut the Squirrel meme coin, launched just over a week prior, was listed on Binance’s Spot market. At the time of listing, PNUT’s market cap was around $100 million. Alongside support from those touched by Pnuts’s story, Binance’s move prompted questions from other investors, particularly in comparison to other meme coins like GOAT, which, despite a larger market cap, was only listed on Futures.

Note: Following the Pnuts incident, several projects share the PNUT ticker. According to CoinGecko, three projects currently use this ticker. Investors should exercise caution and verify the project before investing.
