GM and Lithium Americas Finalize Thacker Pass Lithium Mine Joint Venture

Lithium Americas and General Motors have officially closed their joint venture agreement to develop the Thacker Pass lithium mine in Nevada, marking a significant step towards bolstering domestic lithium production for electric vehicle batteries. This partnership solidifies a crucial link in the electric vehicle supply chain, bringing the United States closer to achieving energy independence and reducing reliance on foreign sources of critical minerals.

Lithium Americas CEO, Jonathan Evans, indicated that a final investment decision for the project is anticipated in early 2025. This timeline suggests that production could commence later this decade, aligning with the growing demand for electric vehicles and the batteries that power them.

The agreement, initially announced in October, involves a substantial $625 million investment from General Motors, securing the automaker a 38% stake in Thacker Pass. This investment comprises both direct cash and a credit facility, demonstrating GM’s commitment to securing a reliable source of lithium for its electric vehicle ambitions.

This financial commitment from GM follows a significant $2.26 billion loan approved for the Thacker Pass project by the U.S. government. The loan underscores the strategic importance of domestic lithium production for the country’s economic and national security interests. Notably, while the loan was finalized under the current administration, the project received initial approval during the previous presidential term.

The Thacker Pass mine holds immense potential, with projections indicating an annual production capacity of 40,000 metric tons of battery-quality lithium carbonate in its initial phase. This output translates to enough lithium to power an estimated 800,000 electric vehicles annually, significantly contributing to the electrification of the transportation sector. The mine’s development is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic activity in Nevada, while also supporting the broader transition to cleaner energy solutions. The partnership between Lithium Americas and General Motors represents a crucial milestone in the development of the Thacker Pass lithium mine. The substantial financial backing and combined expertise of these two companies positions the project for success and signals a significant advancement in the domestic production of lithium for electric vehicles.
