New Zealand authorities have effectively contained an outbreak of bird flu to a single poultry farm in the Otago region of the South Island. This swift action has prevented the spread of the virus and minimized its potential impact on the country’s poultry industry.
The initial case of avian influenza was detected on December 1st at a Mainland Poultry egg farm. Following the discovery, comprehensive testing was immediately implemented on thousands of samples from linked farms. This rigorous process included examining samples from over 4,300 birds across 36 flocks and five different farms connected to the initial outbreak site. Importantly, after the completion of the full incubation period for the disease, all results from these linked farms returned negative. This confirms the successful containment of the virus, according to the Ministry for Primary Industries.
The detected strain was identified as a high pathogenic H7N6 subtype of avian influenza. While highly contagious among birds, this particular strain is different from the H5N1 strain that is currently causing global concern. Despite this distinction, New Zealand officials took immediate action to prevent any potential spread. As a precautionary measure, exports of poultry products, valued at approximately NZ$190 million (US$107 million) annually, were temporarily suspended following the initial confirmation.
This comprehensive testing and negative results are crucial for reassuring international trade partners about the safety of New Zealand’s poultry products. Chief Veterinary Officer Mary van Andel emphasized the significance of the negative test results, stating that they provide confidence in the containment efforts and pave the way for eradicating the disease. While the full export ban remains in place, some poultry products that meet specific heat treatment requirements designed to eliminate the bird flu virus are currently being shipped to Australia.
The Ministry for Primary Industries is now working alongside Mainland Poultry to establish an appropriate stand-down period for the affected property after decontamination procedures are completed. Furthermore, the ministry is collaborating closely with the impacted farmer to address compensation matters. The successful containment of this bird flu outbreak underscores the effectiveness of New Zealand’s biosecurity measures and its commitment to maintaining the health and integrity of its agricultural sector.
